How do I choose a therapist?
Finding a therapist that will be a good match for your problem and personality is an important step. It is always advisable to research a prospective therapist’s training, experience and areas of expertise. Recommendations from a friend, a doctor or another professional can be useful. Beyond that, the first meeting or two should be used to assess your own comfort level with a new therapist. How it feels to be with that therapist is often a good indication of how the therapy will progress.
How long does therapy take?
Therapy can be helpful almost immediately. If the client feels understood and there is a sense of collaboration, some problems can be resolved in a few sessions. Brief Treatment (up to 12 sessions) is useful in adjusting to a recent loss or gain, such as marriage, death, birth or new job. For problems that have been chronic, recurrent, or trauma-related or if the client is searching for a more substantive change, personal growth and self-awareness, enhanced performance and personal well-being a longer time commitment is likely.
Will insurance cover therapy?
Most insurances will cover mental health services. Some policies limit the amount and type of coverage, all require that an official diagnosis be given. Most policies limit the coverage to what the insurance company defines as “medically necessary”. Given the increasing trend in health services towards greater coordination of care and exchange of information, it is advisable for each person to determine the importance of privacy in their care. Establishing the therapeutic relationship outside of the insurance system (self-pay) may be an important step for some who wish to maintain control over their treatment goals and information.
